(Chehalis WA) For the second time this year, Shelton and W.F. West squared off for another 2A EvCo showdown. The last time these teams faced off, W.F. West walked off Shelton in the seventh inning to take home the win. This time around was a little different, as the Bearcats had the bats rolling all game and delivered one of their best games of the season. Shelton fought hard and has already shown that they can contend with W.F. West, but the Bearcats got the bats rolling to remain undefeated in league play.

W.F. West 11, Shelton 1

Shelton started by getting runners on the board after Daniel Crossan was walked, which was followed by a single from Silas Hoff. Connor Coleman, who was on the bump for the Bearcats, retired the next two batters, however, and got W.F. West on offense. Wyatt Hoffman started things off with a single, which turned into a run after an RBI double from Conor Coleman. Another run scored as Hiroto Smaciarz hit a single to drive in Coleman and take a 2-0 lead.

Coleman went three up three down against Shelton at the top of the second for a quick half inning against Shelton, and W.F. West went right back to work with the bats. Miles Martin would get hit by a pitch to lead off and then go from first all the way to home after a passed ball while stealing second that went deep into center field. Hayden Rooney would then reach on an error, and Reece Marquez followed that up with a perfect bunt. Alex Stafford would then cash in with an RBI groundout, and the Bearcats led 4-0.

Connor Coleman would strike out three straight in the top of the third, and once again, W.F. West would be back up to the plate. Beckman Dvorak would lead off with a single, which would quickly turn into a run after an RBI triple from Hiroto Smaciarz. Miles Martin would then drive Smaciarz home with an RBI groundout. Gage Wiens would then get hit by a pitch and then Hayden Rooney would launch a double for an RBI. The biggest inning of the game for the Bearcats would make it a 7-0 game heading into the fourth inning.

The fourth went by quickly for both teams, and the fifth was soon upon them. Shelton once again would be retired in just three batters, and W.F. West went to work once more. The lone run of the inning was from Hiroto Smaciarz, who was walked and would steal second and third. Hd would then score after a passed ball to have the Bearcats take an 8-0 lead.

The sixth became the final inning of the game. Shelton looked to make one last attempt for a comeback, which started with a Carl Turnbow walk. Then, after two quick outs, three straight Highclimbers would get walked in: Winans, Jacob Jacoby, and Colin Mickelson. Shelton would score their first run on a passed ball, and Turnbow would reach home. W.F. West needed three runs for a mercy rule, which is exactly what they did. Alex Stafford would reach on an error followed by a hit-by-pitch to Beckman Dvorak. Hiroto Smaciarz would drive in a run with a single followed by an RBI from Luke McMillan. With runners on second and third, Reece Marquez would hit a single up the middle to drive in the winning run. W.F. West would get the mercy rule for the 11-1 win.

MVP

Hiroto Smaciarz took home the Thorbecks’ MVP honors after going 3-3 with three RBIs and a walk, in which he scored. He also had multiple steals on the day. An outstanding performance from Smaciaz, who could not miss with the bat.
