(DuPont, WA) The USGA held a Local Qualifier for the 126th U.S. Open at The Home Course in DuPont. Five spots were up for grabs to advance to Final Qualifying. There will be a Final Qualifier in Creswell, Oregon at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The players advancing from Final Qualifying will make the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
There were three co-medalists, who shot five-under rounds of 67. Gig Harbor’s Preston Bebich and Theodore Snyder (a) and University Place’s Michael Putnam all outlasted a very competitive field to share the top spot. Bebich had a wild day with birdies on one and three. He bogeyed four, birdied five and eight to go out at three-under. He birdied the par 5 10th hole before a double-bogey on the short par 4 11th. Bebich rallied with birdies on 13, 14, and 15 to bring home a second nine two-under 34. Putnam birdied three, bogeyed four, then rattled off three birdies in a row on the fifth, sixth, and seventh holes for a first nine 33. Putnam birdied 10 and 11 before bogeying the tricky 13th. He birdied 16 to also shoot 34 on the back nine. Putnam is a former PGA Tour player and was the 2013 Web.com (now Korn Ferry Tour) Player of the Year. Putnam has played in six U.S. Opens and has made the cut three times. His younger brother, Andrew, is a current member of the PGA Tour. Snyder had a tame first nine, with a bogey on four and a birdie on eight for an even par 36. The second nine is where Snyder made hay, with birdies on 11, 13, 15, 16, and 17 to fire a scintillating five-under 31.
Seattle’s Dalton Conn (a) and Canada’s Chris Crisologo each shot four-under rounds of 68 to share fourth place and also advance to Final Qualifying. Seattle’s Colten Kleis (a) and Lake Oswego, Oregon’s Drew Woolworth (a) are the two alternates, also at four-under.
Scoring was fairly low, with the average score at 73.70 and 27 rounds that were under par. The front nine played easier than the back nine, with the front averaging at 36.66 while the back averaged 37.03. There were 258 bridies on the day and seven eagles. The easiest hole on the course was the par-5 16th hole. It played under par, with an average score of 4.71 and surrendered 31 birdies, the most of any hole on the course. The hardest hole was the par-3 4th hole, which played half a stroke over par at 3.51. Only seven birdies were made there all day, while there were 37 bogeys and seven doubles or worse.
