The District 4 2A Boys Soccer tournament began on Thursday with the pigtail games before the quarterfinals took place on Saturday. This year only three teams from District 4 will reach the state tournament which makes it that much more competitive with reigning state champions Columbia River as the headliners. The GSHL got off to a great start as they swept the EvCo 2A in the opening round. Our full coverage of the entire District Tournament is all below.

(Tumwater, WA) District 4 2A boys soccer action got going at noon on Saturday with all four quarterfinal matches kicking off within an hour of one another. Our featured match pitted the Evergreen 2A champion Tumwater Thunderbirds against the #4 seed out of the GSHL 2A in the RA Long Lumberjacks. Two teams that both made the state tournament this year would battle it out in the first match of the day.
RA Long was dominant for the first 30 minutes of the match. They consistently kept the ball away from their 18-yard box and Tumwater couldn’t muster a shot on goal until the final 10 minutes of the half. The T-Bird defense handled constant pressure fairly well as keeper Grady Harroun kept the Lumberjacks off the board for awhile. However, a long ball in the 14th minute saw Jayden Rowland split two defenders and just pass it into the back of the net for the first goal of the match. While Tumwater would get some runs in the final 10 minutes behind Malachi Vuong, they couldn’t seem to beat the stout defense of Alex Wooden, Ethan Pittsley, Alexis Soto-Vazquez, and Sixto Soto. That defense led to the Jacks having a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Things were a bit more even at the start of the second half, but Tumwater still couldn’t do much in their attacking third. That is until a breakaway pass found Kaydon Hanks who got Tumwater on the board in the 49th minute, tying the match at 1-1. Just six minutes later, the Jacks were back in front as they finally made the extra pass as Alex Wooden found Beiro Orozco who would fire a perfect shot into the top left corner of the net to make it 2-1 RA Long in the 55th. Jayden Rowland almost replicated his goal exactly in the 66th minute to earn a brace and make it 3-1. Tumwater made things interesting late as Isaak Djigal won a 50/50 ball and found the back of the net in stoppage time to make it 3-2. Tumwater had time for one last run but couldn’t get one more by Landon Irwin as RA Long’s dominant possession time led to a 3-2 win over Tumwater.
MVP and Up Next
The Thorbeckes MVP went to Jayden Rowland for RA Long as his brace led the way to RA Long just hanging on in the end on the road.
Neither team faced elimination on Saturday but RA Long is now one win away from locking up a state tournament berth. The Lumberjacks will play in the District Semifinals on Tuesday at Hockinson at 7pm. The two sides split the regular season meetings with RA Long winning at home 4-2 before Hockinson got revenge on their own homefield, 4-1. Tumwater will face an elimination game on Tuesday at 6pm when they host Centralia. The Thunderbirds swept the Tigers 2-1 and 3-2 in two very tightly contested matches this season.
