Postseason baseball is underway in Southwest Washington and one of the premier high school tournaments is the District 4 2A baseball tournament. Unlike in previous years, there are only three bids out of one of the premier districts for baseball in 2A which creates a log jam for the limited spots. The two that make it to the District Championship will take two of those spots while the final one will be claimed by whatever team survives the elimination bracket.

This post will serve as a hub for the tournament and will be updated with links to other news outlets coverage of games as well as our coverage down at the bottom. Check back throughout the tournament to stay up to date on everything happening.

(Chehalis, WA) Playoff baseball was back in full swing on Tuesday as all four District 4 2A quarterfinals took place at 4:30pm. In the Mint City, it would be the WF West Bearcats hosting the RA Long Lumberjacks. The two teams were at Bearcat Stadium last May for regionals and although their paths never crossed, both would come into this game plenty motivated. With one less bid to state out of District 4, a win to start the tournament gave those four teams the inside track to try to take one of those bids.

Hayden Rooney had a shaky start as he missed with his first five pitches, including hitting Kamble Johns to begin the game. He settled down and got a double play to end the top of the 1st before the Bearcats landed the first blow. Wyatt Hoffman singled and stole second while Hiroto Smaciarz drew a walk. A fly ball to center by Alex Stafford moved Hoffman to third but Connor Coleman couldn’t bring him home. With two outs, a wild pitch would net WF West the first run as Hoffman avoided the tag at the plate to make it 1-0.

Rooney rolled through the 2nd quickly and once again got more run support right after. A leadoff triple by Beckman Dvorak began the bottom half of the inning but Riley Young did a fantastic job to retire the next two batters while keeping Dvorak at third. Reece Marquez would draw a walk to turn the lineup card over but Wyatt Hoffman would not finish this AB. Instead, Young picked off Marquez, but he would stay in the rundown long enough to allow Dvorak to score to make it 2-0.

The bottom of the RA Long order would get things going for the Lumberjacks in the 3rd. Back-to-back singles by Presley Havens and Jaxson Rivenes put two on and Carson Libby moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Kamble Johns grounder to first would not net a run as Alex Stafford threw out Havens at the plate for the second out. A walk to Riley Young loaded the bases with two outs and Jeff Rooklidge would not miss the opportunity. A base hit to center brought home Rivenes and Johns to tie the game at 2-2.

It would not stay tied for long as WF West continued to use speed to their advantage. Singles by Wyatt Hoffman and Hiroto Smaciarz had two on with nobody out. Alex Stafford moved them up with a sacrifice bunt to put them at second and third for Connor Coleman. He was not going to miss a run scoring opportunity twice and sent a fly ball to fairly deep center. Jonah Cadigan would make the catch but it was plenty deep enough for Hoffman to score to put WF West back in front 3-2.

Emmett Goodman took over on the mound for the Bearcats in the 4th and spun a scoreless inning but Riley Young settled in as well, using his breaking ball extremely well. RA Long had bases loaded with one out and tried a suicide squeeze, but it didn’t work as Kamble Johns was caught stealing home. In the bottom of the 5th, Hiroto Smacairz turned a walk into a triple with a couple of stolen bases while Alex Stafford walked and stole second. A wild pitch would see Smaciarz score but the throw to the plate to try to cut him down was off line which allowed Stafford to score as well to make it 5-2.

RA Long looked to threaten again in the 6th as Presley Havens doubled down the right field line, but a perfect relay cut him down at third trying to extend it into a triple. WF West took that momentum into the home half of the inning as Beckman Dvorak and Luke McMillan both walked but remained at first and second with two outs. Wyatt Hoffman would clutch up with a two-out RBI single which was followed by a wild pitch to score McMillan as well. Hiroto Smaciarz added one more two-out run as he drove in Hoffman with his second hit of the day to make it 8-2 moving into the 7th.

The Jacks would not go down without a fight and had three consecutive singles in the 7th with one out. The last of those singles drove in a run as Jeff Rooklidge earned his third RBI of the game. With runners on first and second and just one out, momentum started to build for RA Long. However, a hard grounder off the bat of Evan Hart to third was handled by Gage Wiens who stepped on the bag and threw across the diamond for a 5-3 double play to end the rally. WF West stole nine bases in the game and that helped boost them to an 8-3 win over RA Long.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Hiroto Smaciarz for WF West. The speedy second baseman was on base in all four at-bats as he went 2-2 with two walks and drove in a run while scoring another. Smaciarz stole five bases in the game and likely would have had a sixth if there wasn’t a balk that gave him second base for free in the 6th.

With the win, WF West advances to the District semifinals on Wednesday and will be the visitors despite playing at home when they take on Columbia River at 6:30pm on Wednesday. RA Long moves into the loser out portion of the bracket and are scheduled to play at Wheeler Field in Centralia at 6:30pm on Wednesday against Washougal.

Tumwater 4, Ridgefield 2

(Tumwater, WA) District playoffs have arrived as Tumwater and Ridgefield faced off in an EvCo 2A and GSHL crossover. Tumwater came in as the one seed in the 2A EvCo, going 13-2 in league and 17-4 overall. Ridgefield came in as the fourth seed in the GSHL, going 9-5 in league and 10-11 overall. The teams faced off in a defensive battle where pitching, outfield, and infield for both squads kept the game close. In the end, though, Tumwater’s offense got going just in time for them to take home the win and advance to the district semi-finals.

Luke Overbay started on the bump for Tumwater, and it didn’t take long for him to start dealing. He struck out two of the first batters he saw in quick order and got Tumwater at the plate. In the bottom of the first, Tumwater would score two runs, but not from putting the ball in play. Max Bunn hit a single with one out to get on base, but after that, the bases started to load up after multiple HBPs in a row. Wyatt Chase would get with the pitch with bases loaded to score Tumwater’s first run, followed by a walk that would bring the score to 2-0 in favor of the T-Birds.

This is where the defense started to prevail for both teams. Neither team could do much offensively for a couple of innings, and the only time batters reached base was on walks or HPBs. A quick second and third inning went by until things started to pick up more and more in the fourth. Two Ridgefield batters would get walked in, Caleb DeBeaumont and Henry Wikstrom, followed by a single from Jake Blankenship to load the bases with one out. This was Ridgefield’s best opportunity to this point, but Tumwater escaped unscathed as Reece Holmes hit a ball right back to the mound, and Tumwater was able to get the double play to end the inning.

Tumwater opened the game up in the fifth inning and got the bats hot. Luke Overbay would lead off with a single followed by an RBI double from Jimmy Womach. Liam Gustafson would then hit another RBI single for the second run of the inning. A line drive would lead to a double play as Gustafson couldn’t tag up in time but he would be replaced on the base path after a double from Charlie Crawford. Tumwater would lead 4-0 and only needed six outs to get the win.

The sixth inning came and went for both teams, though Kale Cast for Ridgefield came into the game and struck out two batters, retiring the side quickly in an impressive display. At the top of the seventh, Ridgefield needed one last-ditch effort, and they refused to give up, making the game a nail-biter. Braeden Konrad would come into the game on the bump for Tumwater to close. Henry Wikstrom would reach base on an error to lead off followed by two back-to-back walks to Jake Blankenship and Reece Holmes. Carson Coberly would then hit an RBI single for the Spudders’ first run of the game. With two outs and bases loaded, Brayden Nieberger would get hit by a pitch to add another run for Ridgefield. The final out would come for the SPudders, though ad Tumwater would win 4-2 and advance to the semi-finals to face Aberdeen on 5/13.

MVP

Out Thorbecks’ MVP of the game went to Luke Overbay, who had a great game of pitching and at the plate. He pitched six innings, struck out eight batters, allowed one hit, and didn’t allow a run while only walking two. He also got a single in the game and reached base on 2/3 of his plate appearances. He got it done on the mound and helped lead his team closer to another state appearance.

Tumwater:

  • Luke Overbay – 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 Ks
  • Max Bunn: 2-3, HBP
  • Jimmy Womach – 1-2, RBI, HBP

Ridgefield 1, Mark Morris 0

(Centralia, WA) A pure defensive battle between GSHL foes took place in the loser-out portion of the bracket. Mark Morris came into the game off a loss to Aberdeen, while Ridgefield lost to Tumwater 4-2 the day prior.  Offense was not the hero of this game, but instead the efficiency of both teams from pitching, infield, and outfield. One play, though, would change everything in the end.

Reilly O’Farrell for Mark Morris and Reece Holmes for Ridgefield each got off to hot starts on the bump. The only hit being given up for a while was a single from Ridgefield’s Jake Blankenship in the first inning. From there, both teams were locked into a stalemate as the game flew by due to the speed at which the outs were coming for both teams. One-two-three innings after another for both squads. In the fourth inning, Reilly O’Farrell would hit a double for Mark Morris to put runners in scoring position, but would be left stranded as Reece Holmes continued to deal.

The game would reach the seventh inning still locked in a dead heap with no team getting the momentum swing they were looking for. For Ridgefield, however, they won the pre-game coin toss to determine who played at “home,” which meant that they were in a position to walk the game off as they would bat at the bottom of every inning. The game would go to extra innings into the eighth. Holmes would strike out two Mark Morris players and get his team in the batter’s box.

Ridgefield would begin the bottom of the eighth with a walk from Brayden Neiberger, in which Robert Romito would come in to pinch run, followed by a bunt from Colton Loranger to move Romito to second base. With two outs, Mark Morris would intentionally walk Henry Wikstrom so that they could get a runner out at any bag besides home plate. This brought up Jake Blankenship, who had already had a single in the game. He would hit a ground ball up the middle that Mark Morris’ shortstop, Carter Schmidt, would dive on. As Romito ran to third, his coach told him to stop, but Romito saw something that no one else did and took off toward home. With a full head of steam, Romito was in a race against the ball traveling back at home plate. Romito would then slide and brutally beat the tag, walking off the game for Ridgefield and advancing his team in the bracket.  An amazing game that was a nail-biter until the very end.

MVP

The Thorbecks’ MVP of the game went to Reece Holmes, who pitched a great game, going 8 shutout innings with seven strikeouts, no walks, and only allowing two hits. Robert Romito and Jake Blankenship were also mentioned for MVP as they both helped walk the game off, but the pitching from Holmes was the difference maker in this game, and he takes home the MVP honors.

Notable Performances

Ridgefield:

  • Reece Holmes – 8 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 7 Ks
  • Jake Blankenship – 2-4, RBI
  • Robert Romito – 1 Run Scored, Walkoff

Mark Morris:

  • Reilly O’Farrell – 8 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 BB, 3 Ks
  • Reilly O’Farrell – 1-3, 1 Double
  • Tucker Morrow – 1-3

RA Long 3, Washougal 2

(Centralia Wa) Another loser out game between two teams hailing from the GSHL, and are very familiar with each other. RA Long came into the game after a loss to W.F. West, and Washougal came in off a loss to Columbia River. This game was a defensive battle for most of the game, but the bats would get rolling every couple of innings for both teams, which became a battle until the very end. In a stalemate, it came down to one last stretch of offense that would advance RA Long and keep their season alive.

Jeff Rooklidge would start on the mound for RA Long, and Washougal would have a good start to the game, getting two singles from Owen MacDonald and Kadin Gibbons, but runners would be left stranded, and the Lumberjacks would come to bat. Kamble Johns would lead off with a single for RA Long, followed by another from Riley Young. Jeff Rooklidge reached on a fielder’s choice as first baseman Colton Wilson would throw out Johns at home to prevent a run. However, Evan Hart would come through with an RBI single for the first run of the game. A few batters later, Jonah Cadigan would get another RBI single for RA Long to take a 2-0 lead.

The second inning came and went, and Washougal would respond in the third inning with two runs of their own. It started with a hit-by-pitch to Ryan Ellinger, followed by a single from Nash Neumann to get two runners on board. With two outs, Kadin Gibbons would cash in with a 2-run RBI double to tie the game 2-2. The first three innings are where most of the offense for both teams came from; from there, it turned into a defensive battle. The pitching and defense from the infield and outfield made play after play, and didn’t allow either team to get too many opportunities to take a lead.

It all came down to the seventh inning in the end. Jonah Cadigan came into the game for RA Long to pitch in the fifth inning and continued to pitch well. He turned a quick one-two-three inning at the top of the seventh, and RA Long had an opportunity to walk it off as they were the “home team”.  In the bottom of the seventh, Korgin Booth led off with a single, followed by a bunt from pinch hitter Ryder Worel that he beat out to put runners on first and second. Carson Libby then laid down a bunt to move the runners to second and third. With two runners in scoring position, Kamble Johns laid down another bunt down the first base line that Washougal could not get to in time, and the winning run came in to score in a walk-off. Another tight game down to the wire and a walk-off in the tournament as RA Long advances.

MVP

The Thorbecks MVP of the game award went to Kamble Johns, who not only had the walk-off bunt to win the game and keep the season alive for the Lumberjacks, but also went 3-4 on the day and did great defensively at the shortstop position all game. There were a lot of contributors in the win for RA Long, bit Johns began and ended the game for his team and helped lead them to a victory.

 Notable Performances

RA Long:

  • Jeff Rooklidge – 4.1 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 3 Ks
  • Kamble Johns – 3-4, RBI (Walkoff)
  • Evan Hart – 1-2, RBI, BB
  • Jonah Cadigan – 1-3, RBI

Washougal:

  • Owen MacDonald – 7 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks
  • Kadin Gibbons – 2-3, RBI Double
  • Silas Hall – 1-3
  • Caden Seto – 1-3
