(Tacoma, WA) Former University of Washington head coach, Mary Lou Mulflur, has been named the captain of Team Washington, as part of the USGA’s U.S. National Development Program (USNDP). The USNDP was founded in 2024, and Team Washington is forming next year, for elite athletes aged 13-18.
Mulflur retired a year ago after 42 years at the helm of the Huskies Women’s Golf program. Mulflur helped guide Washington to the 2016 NCAA Championship, where she was named Golfweek National Coach of the Year and the WGCA’s National Coach of the Year. Mulflur sent numerous players to the LPGA, and 20 golfers were on the NGCA All-America teams under her tenure. Mulflur played in the U.S. Girls’ Junior twice, including in 1974 when the Championship came to her home state of Oregon. She also played in the U.S. Women’s Amateur three times and the U.S. Open twice in 1979 and 1980.
Team Washington is set for launch in 2027, with players earning their way onto the team by racking up points from 2026 events, with the points cycle that started on January 1, 2026, and concluding on September 15, 2026. In late 2026, 12 boys and 12 girls will be selected by a “Team Selection Committee” which is composed of members from Washington Golf, Washington Junior Golf Association, Pacific Northwest PGA Section, and the Oregon Golf Association. Ultimately, Washington Golf’s Nate Schroeder is managing Team Washington. The players selected on the team will represent Team Washington for 2027, but will not automatically remain on the team, as players must earn their way onto the team every year.
