(Creswell, OR) On Monday, Golf’s Longest Day, University Place’s Andrew Putnam and Vancouver’s Spencer Tibbits kept the party going for an extra day at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The two were tied for the final spot in the U.S. Open from Final Qualifying, and their playoff needed two days before it was finally settled.
Putnam, who is on the PGA Tour, shot rounds of 70 and 71 to go three-under, while Tibbits, a former standout at Oregon State and Fort Vancouver High School, had the round of the day in his first 18, shooting 66 before a 75 sent him and Putnam into a playoff. There, the two played seven holes before daylight ran out on the pair, and they needed to reconvene on Tuesday morning. On the ninth playoff hole, Putnam drained a long par putt, which put the pressure on Tibbits to make par to keep the marathon going, and he wasn’t able to do so. Putnam is moving on to the 126th U.S. Open at the legendary Shinnecock Hills Golf Club later this month. Tibbits is the first alternate from the Creswell site.
Greyson Leach, out of Rolling Hills Estates, California, took the medalist honors with two rounds of two-under par 70s. TingWei Chang (a) from Chinese Taipei is the second alternate from this site.
