6/22/26

For the first time in 2026 a Seattle Mariner has won a weekly award. On Monday afternoon, Logan Gilbert was named the American League Player of the Week after a strong week with two great starts, both resulting in Mariner wins. Gilbert becomes just the second pitcher to win AL Player of the Week in 2026, joining José Soriano of the Los Angeles Angels who did it back in the week of April 11th.

It has been a frustrating and inconsistent 2026 so far for Logan Gilbert, but this week he continued to build upon the best stretch of his season. Gilbert threw 13 1/3 innings in his two starts this week and allowed a total of two earned runs on just five hits with three walks and 18 strikeouts. It wasn’t just a flash in the pan either as Gilbert has allowed just six runs in his last 36 1/3 innings with 43 strikeouts.

A free agent after the 2027 season, Gilbert is looking to get a contract extension in the near future, which seemed like a given before an injury seemed to rattle him at the end of April last season. Since posting a 4.68 ERA in his rookie year back in 2021, Gilbert has not had an ERA higher than 3.73 since but looks to have found his dominant form that he showed back in 2024. He is the first Mariner pitcher to be recognized as AL Player of the Week since he also won the award back in 2023.

He is one of 14 pitchers in franchise history to win the award, along with James Paxton, Hisashi Iwakuma, Félix Hernández, Joel Pineiro, Kazuhiro Sasaki, Randy Johnson, Chris Bosio, Brian Holman, Mike Moore, Mark Langston, Gene Nelson, Gaylord Perry, Shane Rawley.
