FIFA has suspended the controversial red card given to the US’s Folarin Balogun in their round of 32 match vs Bosnia-Herzegovina. The red card for stepping on an ankle of a defender drew the red card but the controversy arose when it was clear Balogun did not step on the player on purpose and was part of playing the ball.

FIFA has reviewed the incident and issued the following statement:

“By operation of Article 27 FDC, the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one year.”

This allows Balogun to play in the round of 16 match-up Monday night in Seattle against Belgium.
