Argentina and Spain are meeting for the second time ever in the FIFA World Cup. The other time was a group stage match in 1966 that Argentina won 2-1. Now they are playing in the biggest match on the biggest stage in the world. Argentina won the last World Cup and are looking to secure the 4th star on their jerseys. Spain won the World Cup in 2010 and will be one of the hosts of the next World Cup. 

Spain vs Argentina World Cup Championship

The teams played to a 0-0 first half draw. Spain controlled the pace and got 2 shots on goal in the first half. Argentina has lacked their usual touch and have been just a step off in the opening half. Both keepers and backlines have played well. With Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez making a couple big saves to keep the match scoreless.

While there hasn’t been any scoring the match has been physical and entertaining. Argentina got called for 9 fouls and Spain 7 neither team is going to back down from a challenge.

Spain continues to be the more aggressive team offensively taking 15 total shots with 10 of them on target. Argentina’s keeper Emiliano Martinez has been amazing in goal racking up 10 saves in the match. None more important than a free kick taken by Lamine Yamal just before the end of regulation. Argentina hasn’t managed to get a single shot through 90 minutes and stoppage time. 

The other thing Argentina has to deal with is a second  yellow was given to Enzo Fernandez 2 minutes into stoppage time. The means Argentina is going to have to play the extra time down to 10 men. 

End of Regulation Spain 0, Argentina 0

It looked like Spain got a goal in the 96th minute but a foul in the box wiped it away. The first extra time period still knotted up at 0.

Spain scores in the 106th minute to take the lead. Just 39 seconds into the second extra time period Nico Williams headed the ball back to Ferran Torres who shot high over the hand of Martinez.

Torres hit the back of the net again but started his run too early and was ruled offside. 

Final Spain 1, Argentina 0

Spain Wins their 2nd  FIFA World Cup with a goal in the 106th minute of the 2nd extra time period. Argentina registered 2 shots in the match and Emiliano Martinez set a record for saves in a World Cup final with 11 saves. A flurry of tries late by Argentina had the entire New York/New Jersey Stadium on their feet. Spain’s defense allowed just 1 goal all tournament and got a record 7 shutouts at the World Cup 2026.
