(Auburn, WA) 11 races were on Sunday’s card with the last 6 all Stakes races. In our coverage below we’ll have our Stakes stories all first from the 6th thru the 11th races. The undercard, so to speak will follow. Each Stakes race will have a story, interviews or the winners circle interview and race replay. To start with we’ll have “The Track Wire” with notes from the saddle, the barn and betting window.

This was a much anticipated day of racing, track handicapper John Lindley caught one fan hurrying to make the 1st race on Ron Crockett Way just outside the Emerald Downs entry gates.

From the Saddle

Frank Alvarado Double Stakes Win

Frank Alvarado wrapped up Super Stakes Sunday II by winning the late Daily Double. In the Seattle Slew Stakes Alvarado closed from mid-pack to win with Robin Racer and then took the finale aboard Falling Leaves with a front running ride. Alvarado also ran 2nd in the Governor’s aboard Slew’s Tiz Whiz.

Alvarado also won the 2nd race for a triple on the day.

Other Stakes Winners

Adrian Castellanos opened the Stakes races with a dominating win on Aloha Breeze. Castellanos also picked up a 3rd on Ziwhat in the King County Express. Castellanos also won the 3rd race for a double on the day.

Kevin Orozco rode a perfect trip aboard Mattie Goincoastal in the Angie C winning by 5 lengths. Orozco also had a troubled but promising ride on Precise Timing in the Wash State Legislators Stakes at 16-1. Orozco said he got shut down and stopped all their momentum on the turn but rallied to get up for 2nd.

Visiting rider Luis Valenzuela came to town to ride Caps and Carnage in the King County Express and rolled to a 2 1/2 lenth win. Valenzuela and Caps and Carnage improved the 2 year-old’s record to an incredible 4-0.

Amador doubles

After taking the last 2 races off on Saturday due to sickness, leading rider Silvio Amador didn’t waste time getting back to the winners circle taking the 1st race by maybe the closest margin of the season. Calmcoolcollected literally bobbed with the lead against Three Putt with maybe a 1/4 of an inch to spare right on the wire to get the win.

Amador’s Stakes win with Si That Tiger was not nearly as close as they rolled to a 3 length win in the Governor’s. Amador also placed 3rd in the Angie C on Majorical and a place finish in the Seattle Slew aboard Chase.

Krigger keeps pace

Although Kevin Krigger did not get a Stakes win, he finished with two 2nds, a 3rd and 4th from 5 mounts. His most promising was aboard Tax Code but tossed his head at the start of the Governor’s and was caught flat footed finishing 4th.

Krigger did win 2 of the 5 undercard races taking the 4th and 5th races.

From the Barn

Tying a record today was trainer Tom Wenzel winning 3 stakes races in a single day. Wenzel tied his own record and Blaine wright who also has a pair of 3 win Stakes days. Wenzel added to his career leading Stakes wins at Emerald Downs now at 71.

Wenzel took the Washington State Legislators with Aloha Breeze, the Seattle Slew with Robin Racer and the Kent Stakes with Falling Leaves. He added a 2nd place with Slew’s Tiz Whiz in the Governor’s, a 3rd and 4th in the King County Express and a 5th in the Legislators Stakes. He also ran 2nd in a $40,000 optional claimer in the 2nd race. Wenzel’s day was 8 starts, 3 wins, 2 places a 3rd, 4th and 5th collecting a total of $108,285 in purse money. A pretty good day.

Howie Gibson had a big weekend winning 3 on Saturday for his first triple win day. Gibson then got off to a fast start on Sunday when his 1st time starter Candy Charmer closed with a rush to win the 3rd by a head. He also had a 3rd in the 2nd race.

Then took 3 shots at the Stakes races and ran off the board with two of them but Mattie Goincoastal handed Gibson his first career Stakes win in the Angie C. Gibson had 6 starters on Sunday with 2 wins and a show and racked up $47,445 in earnings on the day.

Blaine Wright had the top two contenders in the Governor’s Stakes and Si That Tiger did not disappoint with a dominating performance for regular rider Silvio Amador. Wright also sent out Tax Code who reportedly threw his head at the start and got off to a slow start and never really recovered to finish 4th.

Wright had one starter on the day in the Kent Stakes and 9-1 Tipitap ran a big race just missing 2nmd by a head to take 3rd.

The last trainer to get a Stakes win was the shipper from Wyoming. Dru Hall brought Caps and Carnage to Emerald after crushing a field by nearly 20 lengths in his last out in Wyoming. Hall has won with Caps and Carnage 4 times this year so far with 2 wins at Turf Paradise, once in Wyoming and now here at Emerald. It will be fun to see where they may go next with this talented 2-year-old.

Trainer of the Week

Every week the Media department of Emerald Downs gives out awards and this week’s Trainer of the week may seem like an easy pick in Wenzel. However, Howie Gibson tripled for the first time in his career on Saturday then came back to double on Sunday with his 1st career Stakes win. Wenzel did triple stakes win but he also did that before on closing day last September.

And on any other “regular” week Trainer Steve Bullock would have won it like 90% of the time. Bullock doubled on Saturday and began quickly Sunday with his 3rd win in 2 days when Calmcoolncollected got the perfect bob to win the 1st race which doubled his win total for the year since Friday.

Bullock with a pretty small stable then had one runner in a Stakes on Sunday, Pure Dynamite in the Angie C and closed from last to get 2nd by a neck under Kevin Krigger. Bullock started 5 this weekend and had 3 wins, a Stakes 2nd and a 5th place finish. That’s a 60% win rate, 80% in the exacta and for the year is now 6-8-2 from 21 starts winning at a 29% clip and top 3 finish rate of 76%.

Maybe it’s time for the first 3-way deadheat for Trainer of the week. 

The Owner’s Box

Todaro’s Dominate

Although the owner name is simply George Todaro, the real name is Dr. George and Jane Todaro and what their red,  green and white silks did on Sunday has never been done before in Washington State racing history. The Todaro’s won 3 Stakes races a feat that trainer’s have accomplished but never an owner.

To be fair we need to note that until the last 10-15 years it was impossible to win 3 in a day because for decades there was never more than one stakes race in a day for the most part.

But that doesn’t take away from the dominating day the Todaro’s had on Sunday. They sent out 6 starters and were 100% in the superfecta. They won the Legislator’s Stakes, Seattle Slew and Kent Stakes, Candy Caballo ran 2nd in the 40k optional claimer and took 3rd and 4th in the King County Stakes. 

The 3 wins were number’s 8, 9 and 10. Last year Todaro was one of 3 leading owners as they all tied with 8 wins on the year. He led all owners in earnings with $281,330 in 2025.

Yesterday the Todaro’s added $96,285 in purse money and already have winnings of $240,215 for 2026. They are set to destroy their numbers from last season and have already surpassed the win total. Get used to seeing the red, green and white colors in the winner’s circle.

The Maryanski and Schneider Team

John and Janene Maryanski teamed up with Gerald and Gail Schneider several years ago to form their own potent ownership team. They have been part of multiple ownerships over the years but this pairing of couples began in 2023. They’ve had many top end horses but only one has been a Stakes Champion and that was Si That Tiger who dominated the Governor’s Stakes on Sunday for his 4th Stakes win. 

The Maryanski’s and Schneider’s have started 64 since 2023 and have a 20-14-12 record or a eye-popping 31% win rate and 72% top 3 finish. Their total earnings now top $450,000.

Invader Winner

The Invader from Wyoming’s connections were all at Emerald Downs on Sunday including owner Candice Davis. Davis just got into owning horses this year and has started 8 races. 4 of them are wins and all 4 by Sunday’s King County Express winner Caps and Carnage. If Davis wasn’t hooked on racing before, Caps and Carnage may have just created a new longtime owner.

Home Bred Champ

Our final owner with a Stakes win are long time trackers Nina and  Ron Hagen who are more known for their breeding success at El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw but even they couldn’t give up Mattie Goincoastal. They did welcome still a relative newcomer to racing the Lusk family to be part of this ownership.

Gary, Debbie and sons Kyle and Jeff all jumped into racing and caught the bug hard when they sent out Papa’s Golden Boy. Papa has since retired and Lusk racing continues to send out their own stuck but they have also begun to team up with multiple owners and trainers.

The Hagen’s have started just 90 races as sole owners of a horse over the decades of racing they’ve been involved with. The number of partnerships numbers over 50. This one has the potential to be the most successful with not only a Stakes win but a dominant victory in the Angie C. Mattie Goincoastal is already showing signs of figuring this game out in a hurry. 

Mattie Goincoastal was the only Washington bred to win on Super Stakes Sunday II and was bred by the Hagen’s. The very productive sire is Coast Guard, she’s out of Ms Moscow Mattie by Matty G. The new ownership group which officially is Ron and Nina Hagen and Gary Lusk handed over this talented filly to up and coming conditioner Howie Gibson.

The Claim Desk

In the 2nd race only Atmospheric River ran for a claiming tag of $40,000 and REV Racing stepped up to take the lone offering for the 40k and will go to the Frank Lucarelli barn. This matched the largest claim of the meeting. On June 27th, Executive Chef was claimed for $40,000 by Muddy Waters LLC and went to trainer Mike Puhich.

The Betting Window

The 3rd highest handle was taken on Sunday and despite having 11 races, not the best card for good pay-offs. The total handle was more than 1.7-million. 9 of the 11 winners were favorites and 6 of those were odds on. This triggered a bunch of new low pays for the Daily Double, pick 3, pick 4, pick 5 and pick 6.

The good news is the pick 6 now increased it’s season high carryover to more than $20,000 for next Friday.

Super Stakes Sunday II

6th Race the Washington State Legislators Stakes Purse $50,000

The 6 1/2 furlong Washington Legislastors Stakes kicked off Super Stakes Sunday II with a field of 7 and the heavy likely favorite Aloha Breeze breaking from the 7 hole. Aloha Breeze has won the last two Legislators Stakes as this race will lead to the Distaff on Championship Sunday, August 16. Aloha Breeze ran a 78 Beyer in both wins.

The Stakes record time was set in 2014 by Stopshoppingdebbie in 1:14.20.

Aloha Breeze began as the 1-1 morningline favorite but will have a new rider. The George Todaro owned and Tom Wenzel trained Aloha Breeze has had Carlos Montalvo in the saddle for all her Emerald Downs Stakes win but Montalvo moved his tack to Virginia’s Colonial Downs a few weeks ago. Adrian Castellanos has gotten the call for the first time.

Wenzel also sent out the 2nd morningline favorite at 9-2 LaPush. Other Stakes winners in the race included Kay Cooper’s Precise Timing, Frank Lucarelli’s Saleen G T and Charlie Essex’ Stay Sassy.

When starter Mark Gibson sprung the gates Aloha Breeze jumped out to a quick early lead. New rider Adrian Castellanos fit perfectly with Aloha and had settled down out on the lead all by herself setting reasonable fractions of 22:00 and 44:32 before releasing the brakes and she rolled to another easy win in a final time of 1:15.33.

Precise Timing and Kevin Orozco ran a big race taking 2nd, Saleen G T with Isaias Enriquez ran a solid 3rd with Someday Lady under Silvio Amador finishing 4th.

Aloha Breeze has now won the Washington Legislators Stakes 3 years in a row. Aloha Breeze is owned by George Todaro and trained by the track’s all-time leading stakes trainer Tom Wenzel. Aloha Breeze is now 3 for 3 in 2026 after the connections thought about retiring her from racing after last year. Stable Manager Bob Capelletti said it was a great decision to keep her in training and now they’ll take it year-to-year.

Aloha Breeze is now 15-5-1 from 22 lifetime starts. She picked up the $27,500 winner’s share of the purse and now has career earnings approaching 400k at $388,900.

Race Replay

7th Race the Angie C Stakes Purse $50,000

6 runners lined up for the Angie C stakes going 5 1/2 furlongs and Mattie Goincoastal was made the overwhelming morningline favorite at even odds after a spectacular 7 length win in her only start. The red hot Howie Gibson sends out Mattie in the second Stakes race of 6 on the day.

Pure Dynamite from another hot conditioner Steve Bulloock was the 2nd morningline choice at 7-2 with Majorical from the Oak Crest Farm and trainer David Martinez barn.

Falling Leaves won this race last year and the stakes record time was set in 2016 and 2020 by Karula and Time for Gold each stopping the timer at 1:02.72.

Majorical broke well from the gate while 2-5 favorite Mattie Goinoastal got off a step slow. Kevin Orozco aboard the favorite was not concerned as she settled in down the back stretch. Silvio Amador aboard Majorical was flashing speed going 21.99 for the quarter and 45.46 for the half. But Mattie had this one measured and when Orozco asked she delivered sprinting away to win easily in a final time of 1:05.44.

This was leading trainer Howie Gibson’s 5th win in 2 days and his 1st Stakes win at Emerald Downs. Gibson was a bit concerned with Mattie’s stretch run which was a bit green but Orozco was impressed with she handled the beginning of the race and how much she let him rate her until he asked her to go. Orozco thinks she may have been a little surprised with the extra urging but finished the job in spectacular fashion.

Pure Dynamite with Kevin Krigger chased Mattie Goincoastal in their debut race and led the calvary charge for 2nd place to edge Majorical. Champagne Delight and Alex Cruz was part of the blanket finish for place and ended up 4th.

Mattie Goincoastal is owned by Nina and Ron Hagen, Lusk Racing and Howie Gibson and trained by Gibson. Mattie Goincoastal is a Washington bred b y Coast Guard out of Ms Moscow Mattie by Matty G and was bred by Nina and Ron Hagen of El Dorado Farm.

Mattie Goincoastal is undefeated at 2-0 and picked up $32,500 for the win pushing her career earnings to $45,610.

8th Race the King County Express Stakes Purse $50,000

This was the boys turn in the 2-year-old Stakes and included a 1st time starter. The distance is 5 1/2 furlongs and the Stakes record was set in 2018 by Baja Sur in a time of 1:03.13. Blackberry Jam won the Express last year.

Not a lot of info on the babies but Caps and Carnage ships in from Wyoming for trainer Dru Hall and has been made the 2-1 betting favorite. The invader will face 6 others who have had a run or two around Emerald in a race or certainly workouts. The local top threat seemed to be a pair from the Todaro/Wenzel team with Diamond Dasher at 5-2 and Ziwhat at 7-2.

The invaders knew what they had and when the King County Express gates opened Luis Valenzuela riding for the 1st time at Emerald Downs found himself on the lead with Caps and Carnage.Valenzuela wanted to amke sure he was the pace controller and going 21.99 set them up down the back stretch.

44-1 longshot and 1st time starter being handled by Blake Nunnally was the nearest pressure and inside the 1/4 pole Nunnally and Coal Front Kid were gaining on C and C. Valenzuela said he could hear someoned coming and gave Caps a tap and he was gone. The key part of the race was the 2nd quarter where Valenzuela was able to let Caps and Carnage slow down and take a quick breather. They went 21.80 and then 45.08 which left plenty in the tank for the stretch. They stopped the clock in 1:03.13.

Caps and Carnage races for Candice Davis and trained by Dru Hall. Caps and Carnage has now won 4 straight to start his racing career with 2 wins at Turf Paradise and his last out was a 20 length win at Wyoming. He picks up the winner’s share of $27,225 and pushed his career earnings to $83,385.

9th Race the Governor’s Stakes Purse $50,000

The 86th running of the Governor’s Stakes is the last prep for the Longacres Mile set for Sunday, August 16. A competitive field of 7 will go 6 1/2 furlongs. The Stakes record time was set in 2016 by O B Harbor going 1:13.59.

Some of the regular big names including the only Longacres Mile Champion and crowd favorite 8-year-old Slew’s Tiz Whiz. Slew was the morningline 4-1 3rd choice. However, this is the race that Slew has dominated winning it the last 4 years in a row with a deadheat shared win in 2024 with Arma d’Oro. Slew ran an 87 Beyer the last 2 years and has averaged an 84.5 over his 4 year win streak.

The fabulous 4-year-old Si That Tiger came in as the 5-2 second favorite while Tax Code is coming off his 1stw ever Stakes win in the Budweiser in June. His dominant 2 1/2 length win made him the 9-5 morning line favorite.

When the gates opened in this race it was pandemonium as Tax Code tossed his head and missed the break and was last out of the chute, Slew’s Tiz Whiz got off a step slow and while he’s not a front runner seemed to give up a lot of ground early on and He’s Not Talking reared up at the start tossing jockey Alex Cruz out of the back of the gate and was caught down the backstretch.

This left Si That Tiger another odds-on choice to set the pace from the 1 hole. Regular rider Silvio Amador got Si That Tiger in great position and settled in with nearly pedestian fractions for this group of 22.26 and 44 .56. Once Tax Code, Slew’s Tiz Whiz and Executive Chef got rolling Si That Tiger had sprinted clear and cruised to the Governor’s Stakes win in a final time of 1:14.41.

Slew’s Tiz Whiz trying to win his 5th straight came flying late for 2nd. Jockey Frank Alavarado said he was right next to He’s Not Talking in the gate but doesn’t believe that impacted him he just got started a little slow. Alvarado was pleased h0w he responded and ran on to take 2nd.

Executive Chef and Isaias Enriquez closed well to be 3rd and Tax Code under Kevin Krigger never recovered from the bad start and finished 4th.

The win gave Si That Tiger his 7th career win from 11 starts. He is now 7-1-0 and increased his bank account to $166,770.

Race Replay

10th Race the Seattle Slew Stakes Purse $50,000

The Seattle Slew stakes is making a comeback replacing the former Irish Day Stakes and is the final prep for the Muckleshoot Derby on Championship Sunday and started 7 after a scratch of Glorious Run. A well matched field had Robin Racer from the Tom Wenzel barn as the tepid morningline favorite at 5-2. Robin Racer ran 2nd in the Auburn Stakes.

Chase won the Auburn and despite that was made the 3-1 2nd choice. Chase has taken well to the Auburn oval breaking his maiden by 7 lengths, running a solid 3rd then winning the Auburn for trainer Steve Henson. Other top contenders coming into the 1 mile run had Ole’s Surprise at 4-1,  Senor Tequilas at 6-1 and Now Cato at 8-1.

Another adventure at the starting gate as the #1 Livin Right wasn’t feeling it today and initially refused to start then hopped and tossed Talliyah Timentwa while the rest got out of gate ok. Longshot Now Cato with Alex Cruz took the early lead and 9-2 Chase with Silvio Amador was right behind 2nd.

They held that position through the far turn when Chase and Amador made their move to take command at the 1/8th pole. Odds-on favorite Robin Racer had been loping along near the back but Frank Alvarado had this one timed perfectly and engaged Chase inside the 1/8th pole and then pulled away for a dominant win in a final time of 1:36.10.

Chase was tiring and held well to be 2nd. Senor Tequilas and Kevin Krigger ran a hard 3rd while capping the superfecta was Ole’s Surprise and Allyssa Morales.

Robin Racer is owned by George Todaro and trained by Tom Wenzel. The win improved his career mark to 3-2-0 from 6 career starts. Robin Racer collected $27,500 to push his career earnings to $93,450.

11th Race the Kent Stakes Purse $50,000

A scratch in the 3-year-old filly Kent Stakes cut the field to 6. This race had been previously run at 6 1/2 furlongs and will go to a mile in 2026.

Bewtiching Joy from the Frank Lucarelli barn is coming off a big win in the Seattle Stakes by nearly 4 lengths. Bewtiching Joy has been installed as the 6-5 betting choice.

The fast Falling Leaves from Tom Wenzel’s barn will likely have the lead but the big question is can she go a mile, she did have a 6 length lead in the Seattle Stakes at 6 furlongs under Carlos Montalvo, but Frank Alvarado will get the call today as Montalvo has moved to the East Coast.

9-2 Subtle Shimmer from the Howie Gibson barn at 9-2 and Tim McCanna’s 8-1 Alluring Valentine could also have other ideas than the top 2 favorites.

There were doubters about Falling Leaves’ ability to go 8 furlongs but with a new rider came a different approach. Frank Alvarado knew everyone else would expect Falling Leaves to fall apart so the key was to take advantage of the pace.

When the gates opened Alvarado grabbed Falling Leaves and slowed her down as Alluring Valentine took the initial lead with Fallin Leaves just a half length back. By the first turn Falling Leaves had taken command and led by 2 lengths but more importantly did so at a pace of 23.59, 47.12 and 1:11.20 for 6 furlongs.

Alvarado said he was trying to slow her down to a :48 half but 47 and change did the job as Falling Leaves had another gear when they hit the stretch.

Betting favorite Bewitching Joy with Isaias Enriquez ran into traffic problems and found a crease late but only managed a 4th place finish. Alluring Valentine given a professional ride from Kevin Krigger remained right behind Falling Leaves and held on for a hard fought 2nd.

Tipitap closed from mid-pack and was in the 3 horse photo for 2nd and ended up 3rd. Blake Nunnally got a big run from Tipitap but just fell short of the place money.

Falling Leaves ran the mile in 1:36.79 and races for George Todaro, Todaro’s 3rd Stakes win of the day. Trainer Tom Wenzel got his 3rd Stakes win of the day. Falling Leaves improves to a career 3-1-2 record from 7 lifetime starts. The Kentucky bred earned $27,500 for the win pushing her career total to $93,450.

1st Race 

A field of 5 went 6 furlongs and 1-1 betting choice Calmcoolncollected went to the lead under Silvio Amador and then just held off Three Put with Kevin Krigger t win by a whisker. The final time was 1:09.11. 11-1 Sir Argento with Talliyah Timentwa wasn’t far behind with a solid 3rd place run and Cantcatchthiscat piloted by Isaias Enriquez tried to close from last but flattened out in the stretch to finish 4th.

Calmcoolncollected races for Charlie Clark and trained by Steve Bullock, his 3rd win in 2 days.

5 runners lined up to go 1 mile in the 2nd race and the public was split with three 2-1 shots and all three would finish 1-2-3 and in that numerical order. #2 Candy Caballo was sent to the front by Adrian Castellanos while #3 Adios Jojo and Kevin Orozco sat just behind. Further back came #1 Veritas Aequitas and Frank Alvarado who allowed the lead pair to set some quick fractions of 23.23 and 46.15. When they hit the stretch Veritas Aequitas came up the rail collaring the top two and pulled away for a clear win in a final time of 1:34.89. Veritas Aequitas is owned by Leslie Anne MacLennan, Donna Wright and Dan Markle and trained by Markle.

Candy Caballo held on for 2nd, Adios Jojo stalled in mid-stretch but took the show while Seas of Normandy and Blake Nunnally completed the superfecta.

First time starter Candy Charmer ran a patient race and waited to make his move in the stretch of the 5 furlong sprint and when Adrian Castellanos hit the throttle Candy Charmer responded and closed with a rush to nip Polar Patrol on the wire. Candy Charmer ran the 5 furlongs in 59.18 and races for Paul Miller and Raymond Weijland and trained by Howie Gibson.

Polar Patrol and Kevin Krigger just missed settling for 2nd. Schoolofhardknocks with Alex Anaya ran a good career debut finishing 3rd and another 1ster, Nathan Knows Best under Blake Nunnally took the 4th place money.

8 started for the flat mile and odds-on choice Platinum Diva was way too much for field as Kevin Krigger sat behind the pace and found a seam at the top of the stretch running by them all for a clear win in a final time of 1:37.69. Thirsty Nic with Alex Cruz ran a solid race but was second best, Shanghai Barbie under Silvio Amador took the show money and Lucy L ridden by Allyssa Morales was 4th.

In the last warm-up race you coluldn’t have had it much closer as betting favorite Brother O’Brien got the better of J B Books by a head at the line. Both were well back and J B Books actually got a slight jump on Brother O’Brien and Alex Anaya was looking for his first 2026 Emerald win but Kevin Krigger and Brother O’Brien were locked in and got the win in the final strides in a final time of 1:35.80. Brother O’Brien races for Hern/LePley Racing and trained by Tim McCanna.

J B Books was 2nd, Benny Buckets under Isaias Enriquez got up for 3rd and El Joy with Talliyah Timentwa took 4th.
