(Seattle, WA) Well the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline is now in the rearview mirror and the Seattle Mariners look a little different as we get set for the final two months of the regular season. With the American League wide open and the AL West completely up for grabs, there were a lot of questions if the Seattle Mariners would buy or sell and how aggressive the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers would be as the three teams battle for the division crown.

With Houston sweeping Texas over the weekend and Seattle taking two out of three from Minnesota, things remained tight and set the stage for a wild Monday. To make things even more interesting, the head-to-head tiebreakers are already decided with Houston owning the head-to-head over Texas, Texas having the advantage over Seattle, and Seattle owning the tiebreaker over Houston. What ended up happening was neither team risking too much with just small moves being made.

For Seattle, the big move came on Saturday when they traded starting pitcher Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox to trim their starting rotation down to five. Castillo was the obvious choice to go but with a big contract the M’s had to shop Emerson Hancock and even George Kirby for the right deal. In the end, Chicago takes on Castillo’s entire contract while the M’s get back some relief help in Seranthony Domínguez who will immediately join the bullpen. The M’s also get an outfielder with big league experience in Nolan Jones as well as an intriguing catching prospect in Boston Smith.

In the other deadline move, the Mariners acquired a former division foe in outfielder Taylor Ward from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a trio of relievers. Alex Hoppe is the big name headed to Baltimore along with Harrison Krieling and Brock Moore. Moore was a promising reliever in Double-A while Hoppe has bounced between Triple-A and the big leagues this season. With Domínguez coming over, Hoppe was likely going to see less work with Michael Rucker starting to find some footing as well. Ward will likely be the everyday right fielder with Luke Raley now out for the season and Dominic Canzone locked into the every day DH slot.

While there were no more trades, the M’s did make a couple of roster changes on Monday. Seattle released veteran catcher Mitch Garver and outfielder Rob Refsnyder. The two had very disappointing tenures with Garver rejoining the M’s on a minor league deal this offseason while Refsnyder was brought in to hit lefties but did not live up to expectations. In corresponding moves, the M’s activated Taylor Ward who is expected to be in the lineup on Tuesday and recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda from Tacoma. Pereda hit .270 with 12 runs batted in a 19-game stint with Seattle earlier this season.

There is still potential for other moves to be made in the coming months. Matt Brash, Cooper Criswell, and Carlos Vargas are expected back this month to strengthen the bullpen. Kade Anderson is also a possible bullpen addition in September and Michael Arroyo has raked in Triple-A and could help the team make a late playoff push.

With neither Houston or Texas getting much stronger, the division remains in the Mariners grasp. They need their stars in Julio Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh, and Josh Naylor to pick it up or these changes won’t make a difference. The Mariners begin a three-game homestand tonight at 6:40pm with the Detroit Tigers.
