A great night of fights in Philadelphia that showcased two title fights and two title defenses. Islam Makhachev continues to cement his legacy as possibly the greatest fighter of all time. Mackenzie Dern showed she is at the top of the heap in her division. An all-around fun card with many finishes, upsets, and even a retirement. Here is a recap of UFC 330:
Edson Barboza vs Esteban Ribovics: Lightweight
Esteban Ribovics brought the fight to the longtime veteran and striking legend Edson Barboza. From the jump, Ribovics brought the pressure and landed heavy shots on Barboza that had him stumbling early. Now and then Barboza would land a decent shot, but the pressure of Ribovics never stopped. Barboza’s eye and shot would be split open, which started to alter his effectiveness as the fight went on. Esteban showed no mercy and continued to batter Barboza through the second round before the fight was finally stopped. Ribovics wants a top 15 opponent next, and he could very well get one. This was Barboza’s final fight of his career, and despite the loss, he went out on his sword. Edson Barboza finishes with a professional record of 24-15 and leaves behind a legendary career in the UFC.
Mansur Abdul-Malik vs Dustin Stoltzfus: Middleweight
This was the biggest upset of the night as Mansur Abdul-Malik had been running through his opponents prior to this fight. He had never been to a decision in his career, and all of his win are by finish, almost all being by knockout. Dustin Stoltzfus has faced more adversity in his career, but he has much more experience and it showed in this fight. Stoltzfus showed the well-roundedness of his game against a young and dangerous opponent. He excelled in the grappling, which eventually culminated in him securing a round two submission win. A very impressive performance for Stoltzfus that put a lot of people on notice.
Jalin Turner vs Kaue Fernandes: Lightweight
Jalin Turner returned with a bang in is round one destruction of Kaue Fernandes. It only took him 40 seconds to get the job done after landing a massive left hand that spun Fernandes around. Turner has been someone for a long time who, on any given night, can give top fighters a run for their money. Fernandes came into the fight 11-1 and was on a big win streak, but the experience and skill of Turner were too much. Turner has hovered around the top 15 rankings for a long time, and this win could get him a top-15 opponent next.
Mackenzie Dern vs Gillian Robertson: Women’s Strawweight Title Fight
As many predicted, this fight was a grappling battle until the end. Two of the best grapplers in the division are Dern and Robertson, and while Dern got the better in the end, the fight was even at times. This was Dern’s first title defense since winning the belt and against a very dangerous opponent, but she did enough to outmatch Robertson over the course of five rounds. Dern is a pure grappler, and the minute she gets you on the ground, there isn’t much you can do. The first three rounds went to Dern as she threatened multiple submissions and maintained control on the ground. In the last two rounds, Robertson was the one controlling things and in a dominant position but didn’t win enough rounds to take the belt. A great fight between two elite grapplers, but in the end the champion comes out on top. Dern remains at the top, and time will tell who she will face next.
Islam Makhachev vs Ian Machado Garry: Welterweight Title Fight
The greatness of Islam Makhachev is undeniable, as he once again proves he is the best fighter in the world. Ian Machado Garry is a tough fight for anyone, and Makhachev did everything he needed to do to retain the belt. He took Garry down in the first round and maintained good control to win the first round. The biggest moment in the fight came in round two, where, after disengaging from the clinch, Garry’s hands were down, and Islam threw a head kick that connected and dropped Garry. Makhachev then took Garry down and went to work with his wrestling. The third round, though, witnessed a change in momentum as Garry started to land well with body kicks, head kicks, and a good jab. He smashed Makhachev’s nose and started to deal visible damage to the face of the champion.
The fourth round was close too, and there is some debate over who won the round. Islam had control time but no damage to go along with it, and Garry was the one landing the heavier shots in the clinch and on the feet. Garry was pushing the champ to the limits at times and was showing that he is among the top of the division. In the fifth round, Makhachev took no chances and took Garry down, put him in a body triangle, and secured the win. An impressive win and another title defense for Islam Makhachev against an elite opponent in his prime. Makhachev is solidifying his place as a top-five fighter to ever live and getting close to being the potential GOAT of the sport. He seems invincible, but Garry put up a great performance and took rounds off the pound-for-pound best fighter. Fans will have to wait and see what’s next for the champ, as there are a lot of dangerous contenders awaiting the opportunity.
