A player can lose more than 2.5 liters of sweat in a single hour of tennis when the court bakes under midday sun. By the third set that loss shows up as heavy legs, a slower first step, and in the worst cases a calf that seizes mid-point. Heat does not simply make a match harder. It changes how much fluid and sodium the body needs to keep working, and the gap between what a player loses and what they drink is where the real trouble begins.
Sweat Output in Hot Conditions
Sweat is the body’s main cooling method. When air temperature and humidity rise, the body sends more blood to the skin and produces more sweat to shed heat. On a hot court, sweat rates during match play range widely, from roughly 0.6 to 2.6 liters per hour depending on the player, the surface, and the conditions. One study of indoor match play measured an average of 1.1 liters per hour, with some players losing as little as 0.3 and others as much as 2.0. Outdoors in direct sun, the upper end is higher still. There is a second cost to all that sweating. To cool the skin, the body diverts blood away from the working muscles, and the heart has to beat faster to supply both. A player running a deficit will see a higher heart rate at the same effort, which means the same rally feels harder in hour two than it did in hour one. Heat and fluid loss compound each other, so the cost climbs faster than either problem would alone.
The Widening Drinking Gap
Players rarely drink at the rate they sweat. Changeovers last 90 seconds. Points arrive without a fixed rhythm. Most players replace fluid more slowly during a match than they manage in practice, so a deficit builds through the afternoon and peaks in the later stages, which is when matches are usually decided. Body fluid losses of 5 to 6 liters have been reported across long matches in hot, dry conditions. Performance starts to slide once fluid loss reaches about 2 percent of body mass, a point many players hit well before they feel truly thirsty. Thirst lags behind the actual deficit, so a player who waits to feel it is already behind. Hypohydration also raises the risk of heat illness, which turns a hydration question into a safety one during the hottest stretches of the summer season.
The Role of Sodium
Fluid is only half of what leaves the body in sweat. Sodium leaves with it, and sodium is the electrolyte most tied to tennis cramps. Sweat sodium concentration varies from about 20 to 80 millimoles per liter between players. Measured in milligrams, testing across thousands of athletes has found a range from roughly 200 to more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per liter of sweat. Two players on the same court in the same heat can lose sodium at very different rates.
This matters because muscle cramps in warm weather trace back to sodium depletion far more often than to potassium. When a player cramps late in a hot match, the usual cause is repeated heavy sweating across that match and the ones before it, with the sodium deficit that follows. Drinking plain water does not fix this. It can make it worse by thinning the sodium that remains in the blood, which is one reason a player who chugs water all afternoon can still cramp.
Options for Replacing Lost Sodium
Replacing sodium means choosing a drink or mix that actually contains enough of it. Plain water dilutes what is left. Salt tablets, electrolyte tabs dropped into a bottle, sports drinks, and powders sold by the scoop all aim at the same target, and the best electrolyte powder for one player may contain far more sodium than another needs. The correct amount depends on how salty a given player’s sweat runs. A player whose sweat dries to a gritty crust on the skin needs more replacement than someone whose sweat barely stains. Matching the dose to the person is the part most players skip, and it is the part that separates a plan that works from one that only looks organized.
Past the One-Hour Mark
For low to moderate activity under an hour, water is a reasonable fluid replacement. Tennis in the heat rarely stays that short or that easy. Once a match runs past 60 minutes, carbohydrate and electrolyte drinks tend to serve a player better than water, because they replace both the sodium leaving in sweat and the fuel the muscles are burning through.
The one-hour line is a rough marker. A punishing first set in 95-degree heat can push a player into electrolyte territory faster than a slow, shaded match would. Humidity is the other variable. When the air is already saturated, sweat drips off the skin instead of evaporating, so it cools the body less, and the player sweats even more to make up the difference. High humidity is the reason an 85-degree day can feel more dangerous than a dry 95-degree one.
Reading Your Own Sweat Rate
The wide ranges in the research point to one practical step. General guidelines cover the average, but no player is the average. The simplest home method is a scale, which is all it takes to calculate a sweat rate. Weigh yourself before a match and again after, without heavy wet clothing. Each pound lost is roughly 16 ounces of fluid that was not replaced during play. A player who drops three pounds in a two-hour match learns more from that number than from any generic chart.
Sweat saltiness is harder to measure at home, though visible salt residue on skin and clothing gives a usable clue. Players who repeatedly cramp, or who finish matches with gritty white salt marks on their gear, are the ones who benefit most from adding sodium rather than water alone. A few matches of tracking weight and watching for salt stains will tell a player more about their own needs than any one-size chart printed on a bottle.
Setting a Heat Plan Before the First Serve
Hot-weather tennis rewards planning done before the warm-up. That means arriving already hydrated rather than trying to catch up mid-match, since the body absorbs fluid faster when it is not already deep in a deficit. It means knowing roughly how much a player sweats and how salty that sweat tends to be. And it means treating the later stages of a match as the danger zone they are, because that is when accumulated fluid and sodium losses turn into cramps, errors, and slower movement.
Heat will always raise the cost of a long match. What a player controls is the size of the gap between loss and replacement. Close that gap with the right amount of fluid and sodium, and the third set feels like tennis instead of a fight to stay upright.
