Seattle 9, Kansas City 9
(Kansas City, MO) The Seattle Seahawks traveled to Kansas City on Friday night to take on the Chiefs in their final pre-season game of the year. The Hawks and Chiefs were both 0-2 and wanted to win but it still is more important for each coaching staff to get the looks of players to help them determine who is going to be on their final rosters.
Seattle started with Jalen Milroe under center, and he played the entire game. This meant that Sam Darnold would not play a single snap of pre-season ball.
After a pair of punts between both teams to begin the game. KC began their 2nd drive on their own 30-yard line. Garrett Nussmeier led the Chiefs down the field to the Seattle 30. Nussmeier then tried to fit one in between Seattle defenders and new Seahawk Trevon Diggs picked off the pass to give it back to Seattle and deny the Chiefs.
Milroe would then lead the Hawks on his best drive of the 1st half highlighted by a huge completion to Cody White a 40-yard pass, catch and run. Milroe then found tight end Elijah Arroyo with a 24-yard completion. The drive would stall sending out Jason Myers who hit a 46-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 4:42 to play in the 1st.
Kansas City bounced back on the kick-off return with a 57-yard return to the Seattle 46 by Brashard Smith. The Seattle defense bent a little but held forcing KC to kick a short Harrison Butker field goal and the game was tied 3-3 with1:03 to play in the 1st.
The Chiefs would get the ball back and went on a long drive from their own 35. As Kansas City approached the end zone, Nussmeier fired one to Andrew Armstrong but Seattle’s Nehemiah Pritchett with an excellent play stretching out and getting his hand in and batting down the intended pass.
This forced a 4th and 7 and Butker came on to hit his 2nd field goal making it 6-3. Neither side could add to the score prior to halftime and at the break the Chiefs were up 6-3.
Seattle began with the ball in the 3rd but a quick 3 and out they had to punt it away. KC got it on their own 34. 8 plays later Butker came on to attempt a 58-yard field goal, but it sailed wide right.
Seattle would get the ball back on their own 48 and would put on their most impressive drive of the night. The Hawks would start with a pair of completions for a total of 20 yards, followed by an offensive holding call then another 11-yard completion.
The biggest play of the game for the Hawks offense was a 3rd and 6 on the KC 28 when Milroe hit Emmanuel Henderson Jr for a 26-yard strike to the 2-yard line for a 1st and goal.
Seattle didn’t make it easy after Milroe ran it in for 6 a holding penalty took the 6 off the board. Seattle got it back to a 3rd and goal from the 4, Milroe dropped back and hit a wide-open Nick Vannett for the 6 and this time is stayed.
Jason Myers, who has struggled this pre-season, then missed the PAT wide right and the score remained 9-6.
Beginning the 4th quarter, Kansas City worked the ball down to Seattle’s 4 yard with a 1st and goal. The Seattle defense dug in and held the Chiefs out of the end zone forcing a 4th and goal from the 1. KC Head Coach decided to kick the field goal and Butker popped the 19-yard kick through the uprights, tying the game at 9-9 with 12:01 to play in the game.
The game would come down to the final drive where the Seahawks took possession on their own 20 with about 3:30 to play in the game.
The big play was a 30-yard dart when Milroe found Henderson again. This moved the ball into field goal range and Seattle ran the clock down to 3-seconds to play when they called their final time-out.
Myers came on looking to redeem his missed PAT with a 52-yard attempt. The snap and hold were good, but Myers sliced the kick to right missing the game winning kick.
There is no overtime in pre-season, so the game ended in a tie and both Seattle and Kansas City finished the pre-season with identical 0-2-1 records.
Seattle will open the NFL regular season schedule when they host New England on Wednesday, September 9. Kansas City opens league play on Monday night, Septemeber 14 when they host Denver.
Teams will be making their final cuts by Sunday to get down to the 53-man roster. They can then sign players to the practice squad.
The Numbers
Offensively for Seattle, Jalen Milroe played the entire game and finished the night going 16/26 for 223 yards and a touchdown.
Leading the receivers were Cody White (3/69) with a long catch of 40 yards, Emmanuel Henderson Jr (3/58) with a long of 30 and Ricky White III (3/27). Tight end Nick Vannett had 1 catch for 4 yards and the lone TD in the game. 2nd year tight end Elijah Arroyo only played in the 1st 2 drives and had another big catch for 24 yards.
Jacardia Wright led the Seahawk rushing attack with 15 carries for 33 yards, Milroe ran for 20.
Defensively, Trevon Diggs played a few series and had the lone turnover, the interception. He also had another pass defended and a solo tackle.
Leading the tackle stats was Power Echols with 8 and 3 solo tackles. Patrick O’Connell also had 8 tackles, a solo and a QB hit. Bubba Thomas was moving the line of scrimmage with 7 tackles, 2 solo and 2 tackles for loss.
Special teams, punter Michael Dickson booted 6 punts averaging 51 yards, dropping 2 inside the 20 and a long of 60.
Field goal kicker Jason Myers struggled again going 1 for 2 in field goals and missing a PAT.
The kick returners did well too with Henderson returning 2 kicks for a total of 41 yards and Montorie Foster Jr had one return for 22 yards. The Hawks did not return any punts.
