Union 5 Evergreen 0

(Vancouver, WA) There is a old saying in sports that says “you have to play the games”. Yesterday at Evergreen High School was a great example. Driving to the park I was thinking here are the Plainsman with only three wins all season, and the Union Titans coming into the game with 7 w’s thus far. Who knew there would be no scoring until the 9th inning. That’s right, the 9th inning.

The Plainsman behind  southpaw pitcher Tommy Synder gave the Titans all they could handle yesterday afternoon. Top of the first Synder sent the Titans down in order. Bottom of the first would prove to be the best offensive chance Evergreen would have all afternoon. The Plainsman would send 5 men to the plate. Jax Allen and Dawson Allen would single, but then they were followed by two strikeouts and a ground out. So at the end of the 1st we were at a 0-0 tie, and the score would remain like that for the next 8 innings.

In the top of the 5th RS Quirante hit a two out triple as the ball rolled all the way to the outfield fence, but the next batter grounded out weakly to shortstop and the threat was snuffed out.

Let’s not forget the great job that starting pitcher for the Plainsman did. Wyatt Rogina held the Titans in check thru 7 innings before being relieved. He had a three hitter thru seven.

Top of the 9th the Titans behind three singles, and two Evergreen errors crossed the plate five times. To this point in time it truly was a pitchers contest. Evergreen got one single, and three   ground outs in the bottom of the 9th and the Titans dodged a big time bullet.

The Titans will take their conference record to 7-9 while Evergreen falls to 3-13. Both teams have two games left in the regular season before district tournament time.
