Toutle Lake 3, Napavine 2 (25-20, 25-20, 13-25, 18-25, 15-13)

(Napavine, WA) It was a match of big momentum swings on the final day of league matches in the Central 2B with 2nd place Toutle Lake looking to hold onto that position with a 7-1 league mark while Napavine tied for 3rd at 6-2 with Adna was trying to create at least a 2 way tie for 2nd depending on how Adna did in their match against Rainier. Adna ended up winning and the standings above are correct.

Toutle Lake came out and took the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores. Both sets were determined by big service runs. In set 1 with trailing 16-15 Toutle Lake’s Kendal Dean ran off 8 points with an ace to push their lead to 23-17. Ileigh Lynn and Layni Brandhorst had big kill shots and blocks during that critical run. In the 2nd set the turning point was at the 18-15 mark with Napavine leading but the Ducks Grace Hadaller at the service line. She won the 1st point during the rally of the match which kickstarted a 6 point surge giving T-L a 22-19 lead which they maintained for the second straight 25-20 win and went up 2-0.

The Tigers were not about to get shut out and although they didn’t have a 6 or 8 point run they used early consistent serving to pull away to a huge early lead that the Ducks this time could not come back from. Jessie McCoy got things started with a 3 point run followed by 4 points from Grace Gall and another 3 points from Keira O’Neill for a big 10-2 advantage and after O’Neill was done the Tigers led by 13-4. O’Neill also came up with a couple of blistering kill shots while Morgan Hamilton was all over the court. Napavine would go on to force a set 4 with a 25-13 win.

In the 4th set it was much like the 3rd with Napavine getting another 4 point run from O’Neill with 2 aces. Later it was Gall setting the tone with 6 points with an ace and a tremendous block by O’Neill and the Tigers led by 8, 20-12 and from there went on to the 25-18 win to set up an epic 5th set battle.

In the final set to 15 both teams were even at 7-7 when Toutle Lake’s Lainey Dean ran off 4 straight for an 11-8 lead. During this run Kendal Dean came up with a couple of great saves while Haleigh Cooper was solid in the middle some good libero play from Haylie Coder while Brandhorst and Hadaller were strong at the net.

Napavine wasn’t done and battled back to tie the set at 13 with a couple of great saves from libero Emily Kang and Hamilton coming up with some important service points. Toutle Lake took the lead 14-13 and Lynn came on to serve the final point as the Ducks held off the hard charging Tigers for the 3-2 win.
