Olympia 68, Sumner 47

(Olympia, WA) Entering the New Year, the Olympia and Sumner boys basketball teams sat near the top of the 4A SPSL with almost identical records. Olympia came in with an 8-3 overall record and 3-1 record in 4A SPSL play, while Sumner was 7-3 overall and 4-0 in SPSL competition but Tuesday night’s game turned out to be lopsided as the Bears dominated early and coasted to a 68-47 win over the Spartans.

The 1st quarter was a nightmare for Sumner as the Spartans failed to score a single point in the period, while Olympia raced to an early 14-0 lead. The 2nd quarter was much of the same, however Sumner did muster up some points and made two shots from the field along with some free throws as Olympia took a commanding 29-9 lead at halftime.

The Spartans were much more competitive in the 2nd half as Sumner scored 38 2nd half points, compared to 39 2nd half points for Olympia. Senior Gabe Downing came off the bench to lead the Bears with 17 points, fellow Senior Andrea Engholm chipped in 12, and Sophomore Matt Lindbolm had 13.

Despite the slow start for Sumner, Senior Kaden Kastberg lead the Spartans with 17 points.

The loss for Sumner brings the Sumner to 7-4 overall and 4A SPSL play while Olympia improves to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in 4A SPSL action. Olympia travels to face Emerald Ridge on Thursday, while Sumner has the tough task hosting of hosting defending 4A State Champions Curtis on Thursday.
