Inglemoor Vikings –          10/14/3
Sammamish Redhawks –  4/4/3

(Bellevue, WA) The baseball season has reached the heart of the regular season. League play is in full swing, and the KingCo 3A is looking at another exciting league tournament in May. The Inglemoor Vikings are the defending KingCo 3A Champions, and are playing like it, winning all six games up to this point. The Sammamish Redhawks played Inglemoor very well in last year’s KingCo Semifinals, and were looking to break their mid-season losing streak in a big way. In the first of two meetings this week, there was a little bit of everything in this Monday afternoon contest.

The game started with Inglemoor’s Rocco Suarez reaching with a single. Suarez stole second and moved to third as Ben Barnes got on due to a fielding error. Dylan Clark drove in Suarez on an RBI single to put Inglemoor ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Titan Fraser clobbered the first pitch he saw and drove in Aidan Tsu, who was running for Dylan Clark, and made it 2-0 on an RBI triple. In the bottom of the inning, Sammamish had the bats going with Ozzy Turner and Kolin Jaster leading off with back-to-back singles. After an out, Jaster moved to second base and Turner to third. Jack Lansdowne lined out to Suarez at second, and the throw got away as the third baseman slipped going to the bag, which allowed Turner to sprint home to score. Inglemoor led 2-1 after the first.

In the second, Carter Stocum, Ben Koppes, and Carter Madigan hit three consecutive singles to load up the bases with no outs. Rocco Suarez was hit by a pitch, which gave Inglemoor a 3-1 lead. On the next pitch, Ben Barnes grounded out to shortstop, which drove in a run for a 4-1 Vikings lead. Dylan Clark stepped in and pounded the second pitch he saw to deep left field. The ball one-hopped the fence for a two-run ground-rule double as Inglemoor took a 6-1 lead. Sammamish responded in the bottom of the second as Cole Thompson drew a walk and stole second. Lincoln Castillo followed Thompson with a walk of his own. Grady Bunselmeyer dropped a perfect bunt towards third base to load the bases with no outs. After Inglemoor pitcher Graysen Holes struck out the next batter, Ozzy Turner drew a walk to cut the Redhawks’ deficit to 6-2. Josh Perez was walked with two outs and the bases loaded to make it a 6-3 game, with Inglemoor’s lead suddenly shrinking. On a wild pitch, Bunselmeyer took off for home and made it 6-4 as the tying run was at second base, but Inglemoor held their ground and got the final out.

Brendan Zeller led off the third inning with a single for Inglemoor. Sammamish’s Max Paguia made a fantastic play at third as Carter Stocum hit a liner to Paguia, who, off a hop, gloved it, fired the ball to second for one out. Ozzy Turner turned two by zipping the ball to first baseman Peyton Corp to quickly get the second out. Sammamish would hold Inglemoor scoreless for the first time in the game and Cole Thompson got on with an error in the bottom of the third but was stranded at second. Rocco Suarez reached first with his second single of the game with one away in the fourth inning, but Sammamish turned another double play, this time highlighted by Ozzy Turner. Inglemoor still led 6-4 at the halfway point of the contest.

Kolin Jaster drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the fourth but was caught stealing to end the inning. Connor Sullivan hit a single for Inglemoor in the top of the fifth and made it all the way to third base, but was left there as Sammamish held Inglemoor scoreless for the third straight inning. Reid Baum drilled a two-out double to bring the tying run to the plate for Sammamish in the bottom of the fifth, but Inglemoor used great defense to get out of the inning unscathed.

Carter Stocum led off the sixth inning by getting hit by a pitch, and Ben Koppes followed up with a single. After Carter Madigan moved the runners over to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, Rocco Suarez hit a hard chopper to shortstop. The throw home was on time, but the ball dribbled away from Sammamish as Stocum scored to give Inglemoor a 7-4 lead. On the next pitch, Ben Barnes hit a sacrifice fly to left that was far enough to bring in Koppes and add to the Vikings’ lead. Inglemoor led 8-4 after a two-run sixth inning. Graysen Holes retired Sammamish in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

Sammamish quickly got the first two outs of the seventh inning, but Brendan Zeller kept the inning alive for Inglemoor with a single. Carter Stocum drilled a line drive down the left field line for an RBI double as Zeller scored to make it a 9-4 Inglemoor lead. Ben Koppes followed up with an RBI single to drive in another run to make it 10-4. In the bottom of the seventh Ozzy Turner was hit by a pitch to put the leadoff man on for Sammamish. After a strikeout, Josh Perez hit a line drive directly to Carter Stocum, who snagged it, turned and stepped on first to end the game as Inglemoor would win 10-4.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP was another difficult decision, but ultimately, Rocco Suarez would bring home the honors. Suarez reached base all four times he stepped up to the plate, singled twice, scored twice, and had an RBI while playing terrific defense at second base. Carter Stocum was awfully close to being MVP, scoring three times, getting hit by a pitch, getting a single and a double, and the crafty game-ending double play. Ben Koppes had a good day with three singles, an RBI, and two runs scored while securing some flyouts in center field.

Sammamish’s Ozzy Turner continues to shine at second base. Turner reached base three times, scoring once, and was part of two crucial double plays. He also handled some groundouts routinely. Kolin Jaster had to flash the leather in center field numerous times, while Cole Thompson did his part by reaching base twice while scoring a run.

Inglemoor improves to 9-4 on the season and 7-0 in league play. Inglemoor remains in first place in the KingCo. Sammamish drops to 6-7 on the season and 3-6 in league play. The two sides will play again on Wednesday at Inglemoor.
