SUMNER, WASH
Jose Nobrega and Ezekiel Gopaul found the back of the net in the first half, while goalkeeper Cole Louman played steadily for the Cascade Christian Cougars to defeat the defending 1A Champion University Prep Pumas 2-1. Jack Hyde tallied the lone goal for University Prep in loss with Auggie Reed being dealt the loss for the Pumas.
Saturday’s rendezvous served as a battle between last year’s top two seeds in the 1A State Tournament. Second seeded Cascade Christian was bounced in the first round to The Bush School 4-1. University Prep went on to defeat The Bush School in the State Championship Game 2-1. Although the lineups are much different, the potent contenders of 1A factored for what had the makings of an evenly matched contest.
Cascade Christian found the scoreboard first in the 13th minute when a corner kick sent by JP Gois found the head of Jose Nobrega to put the Cougars up 1-0. A defensive miscue allowed Ezekiel Gopaul to find the back of the net. The 38th minute tally gave Cascade Christian a 2-0 lead heading to halftime.
In the second half, University Prep’s Jack Hyde’s penalty kick goal at the 43rd minute trimmed the deficit to 2-1. Both keepers showed their resolve in the second half. University Prep keeper Auggie Reed remained busy with Cascade Christian bringing tremendous pressure throughout the contest. However, Cole Louman had the final say, with the penalty kick the only goal he allowed all day.
Cascade Christian’s win gives them their seventh win in a row.
University Prep concludes the regular season against Overlake next Thursday. Cascade Christian’s season continues on the road against Seattle Christian on Monday, the beginning of five games in eight days for the Cougars.
The Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP was Ezekiel Gopaul with the game winning goal while generating plenty of chances for Cascade Christian.
