(Southampton, NY) Two Washingtonians made the cut at the 126th U.S. Open from the legendary Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island. University Place’s Andrew Putnam and Vancouver’s Spencer Tibbits took on the tough course and made the weekend after two great rounds of play on Thursday and Friday. The pair would ultimately fall short of Wyndham Clark, who won his second U.S. Open in four years, but Putnam and Tibbits represented the state well and continue to show that there are great players from Washington.

Both Putnam and Tibbits made the cut by two shots at two-over, but it was Tibbits who would narrowly take home low-Washingtonian. He had a tough third round with a six-over 76, but was one of just three players to birdie the tough par 3 17th hole. The former Oregon State star also added a birdie on the par 5 5th hole, one of just two par 5s on the card. On Sunday, Tibbits carded his first birdie on the 10th hole after a four-over 39 on the front nine. Tibbits brought it home in 34 for a one-under final nine and fired a three-over 73. For the Championship, Tibbits was 11-over and tied for 61st with Jackson Van Paris. Tibbits doesn’t have PGA Tour status, but making the cut at the U.S. Open gives him an exemption through the first stage of Q-School, which is a massive advantage for players without PGA Tour status.

Andrew Putnam’s weekend started with a four-over round of 74, matching his first round. Putnam had back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes for his highlight of the day. The final round was a tough go, as Putnam shot an eight-over 78 but was one of nine players to birdie the 12th hole. Putnam was 14-over par for the week and tied for 65th alongside the 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama and others. As it stands, Putnam is 64th in the FedEx Cup Standings, which puts him just inside the top 70 of players who qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Putnam will have some work to do over the summer to secure his spot, but with a great season so far, he’s in a great spot to play at least one FedEx Cup Playoff tournament. Putnam is an alternate tee for the Travelers Championship next week in Connecticut, where only 72 players will tee it up in the PGA Tour’s signature event.
