Washington is a state known for producing great players in basketball, football, baseball, etc., but in the MMA world, the Evergreen state has produced many athletes, including one of, if not the greatest, MMA practitioners ever. Let’s take a look at the best fighters to ever come from Washington and review their career. From UFC veterans, all-time greats, all the way to pioneers of the sport.

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson

Demetrious Johnson was raised in Richland, Washington, and is possibly the most skilled fighter to ever compete in MMA, and is regarded by most MMA fans as the GOAT of the sport alongside Jon Jones. Everything he does in the octagon is elite, from his striking to jiu-jitsu to wrestling; he can do it all and at the highest level. He won the flyweight title back in 2012 and, since then, has had 11 consecutive title defenses, which is the most in UFC history. Even eclipsing the likes of Jon Jones, George St Pierre, and Anderson Silva in terms of defending the title. This is dominance that is unseen in the sport, and he makes it look easy most nights.

Not only did he have the most title defenses in UFC history, but in 2019, he left the company and went to ONE FC, which was another promotion with high-level talent. It didn’t take him long to reach the top, as he would defeat Danny Kingad for the belt and then go on to win two more championship fights against Adriano Moraes before retiring in 2024 as the champion. 14 belts to his name and is one of the most skilled and dominant fighters of any era that might not be touched again in the sport. This year, Johnson was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at UFC Seattle last March, solidifying his legacy in his home state. Washington has produced a lot of great athletes, but none that have been considered the greatest of all time in their sport until Demetrious Johnson came around, and it’s hard to think there will be another fighter like him for a long time.

Randy Couture

Randy Couture was born and raised in Everett, Washington, and is a pioneer in MMA. His legendary rivalries with the likes of Chuck Liddell and his highlight victories across multiple weight classes helped launch the UFC into what it is today. He had a total of six undisputed titles in his career and was the first-ever fighter in UFC history to win belts in two different weight classes (Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight). He also successfully defended his championships three times in his career. He is a staple in the world of MMA, and you can’t discuss the history of the sport without mentioning the name Randy Couture.

Julianna Pena

Julianna Pena hails from Spokane, Washington, and has had a great career in the UFC so far, and is far from done. She was the first female winner of the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter competition and is a former Women’s Bantamweight champion after defeating Amanda Nunes in what is the biggest upset in MMA history. She would lose to Nunes in their second fight, but with Nunes retiring, Pena won the belt back against Raquel Pennington, securing the second belt of her career. She is no longer the champion, but she is still one of the most dangerous fighters in her division and always hangs around title contention. She could see another opportunity for the belt one day, as she feels she has unfinished business and is looking to reach the mountain top once again.

Michael Chiesa

Michael Chiesa is a true veteran of the sport and a journeyman. He is from Spokane, Washington, and always remembered his ties to this state throughout his career. He retired this year at UFC Seattle with a submission victory over Niko Price and finished with a professional career of 20-7. Chiesa was always a fighter who spent his career in the rankings for both welterweight and lightweight. He has won over fighters like Tony Ferguson, Beniel Dariush, Diego Sanchez, and many more. He is an elite grappler who is feared on the ground due to his submission game. The highest rank he ever reached was the #6-ranked welterweight in the world, and although he never got the belt, he still remained a constant threat in his respective division.

Miesha Tate

Miesha Tate is from Tacoma, Washington, and she played a big role in the past and current success of women’s MMA. She is a former Strikeforce champion and UFC Champion in the women’s Bantamweight division. Her biggest claim to fame, besides having the belt, was her rivalry with Ronda Rousey from 2012-13, which sparked a massive push for the women’s divisions, and the fights themselves did not disappoint. She is a pioneer for women in the sport, and that has carried all the way to today. She continues to fight for the UFC, and her legacy has already been solidified in the company.
