Olympia 2, Bellarmine Prep 0

9/9/16

(Olympia, WA) There was a ton of teams switching leagues and classifications since last year that has ended up with several new league and re-formed leagues and some leagues disappearing. One of those no longer in existence is the Narrows League and two of their mainstays, Olympia and Bellarmine Prep now find themselves in the SPSL 4A. Despite a different league with new league partners, the rivalry between the Bears and Lions remains strong.

In a scheduling oddity, the Olympia Bears came into this match with a 2-0 record, both league matches with a 3-1 win over Emerald Ridge and a 2-0 victory over Rogers (Puyallup). Meantime, this was the season opener of the Lions.

Olympia also under new Head Coach Tamara Liska jumped out quickly on the Prep scoring in the 1st 4 minutes. The Bears offense attacked and Ruby Roedall passed the ball into a crowd where teammate Kerstin Carlson got ahold of it and knocked it home for a quick 1-0 lead.dsc_0020

The 2 teams would pretty much stalemate to the half and through most of the 2nd 40 minutes. The Lions had some good opportunities but Oly keeper Carly Becker was a brick wall denying them each time. Prep led the Bears in corner kicks 4-2 but could not penetrate the stiff Bear defense from the set plays.

Olympia would seal the win late in stoppage time when Bella Hood took a perfect pass from Ciel McDonald with a 1-touch and kick to the far post for the final tally giving Olympia the 2-0 win. The bears are now 3-0 in league play while the Lions open 0-1.

Our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Players of the Game were Olympia keeper Carly Becker for her shut out win and Bellarmine’s Mallory Price who had a strong night on the defensive line. Our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game went to Bella Hood and her fantastic goal to put the match away.
