Tumwater 2, Black Hills 1 (Shootout 4-3)

(Tumwater, WA) The Tumwater T-Birds defeated the Black Hills Wolves back on October 11th 1-0 in a shoot-out 4-3 and handed Black Hills their only league defeat. The 2nd go-round had more riding on the outcome than the 1st time. If Tumwater won they would take sole possession of the Evco 2A League title and grab the #1 seed into the District Tournament. If Black Hills won they would share the League Championship and if they won by 2 or more would take the 1st seed.

There was much to play for and a huge difference between the 1st and 2nd seed. The 1st seed will host RA Long on Saturday. The Lumberjacks finished the GSHL league with a 6-6 mark while the 3rd place team will be either Ridgefield, Columbia River and Hockinson. Hockinson beat Ridgefield Tuesday night and both are how 10-2 while CR plays Washougal Wednesday night and if the Chieftains win they also will be 10-2 creating a 3-way tie. Likely the tie will be broken with criteria such as goal differential, but regardless Black Hills will have to face a 3rd seed with a 10-2 record, 9-3 at the worst.

This game was typical between the T-Birds and Wolves very physical and both teams not willing to give an inch. In the 1st half Tumwater’s Bella Foos opened the scoring in the 25th minute when she took a crossing pass from Rillee Stillings and poked it past Wolves keeper Devin Herbert and it was 1-0.

The Wolves struck back when Sydnee Lowe was taken down in the box in the 37th minute by Kayse Smack resulting in a PK that Lowe did not miss. Smack was extremely active on the backline and earlier in the 21st minute made our ProActive Physical Therapy Play of the Game when she came from one end of the field all the way back into the box on the Tumwater side getting between Black Hills’ Megan Lowe and Tumwater keeper Cassie Mulling for a fantastic save. The 2 teams would go to the half with nothing decided in a 1-1 tie.

In the 2nd half both would have great scoring opportunities, Sydnee Lowe fired 2 shots that missed by inches, one clanged off the near post on a long outside shot and the other trimmed the crossbar and went over the goal. Foos also had a great chance to end it in regulation but she also had one that looked like an NFL field goal kicker banging one off the crossbar. The match would be stalemated through regulation and both golden goal overtimes which led to the 2nd shootout between these 2 teams.

Emma Lindsay got the Wolves on board first but Haily Sanne would have her shot blocked by Herbert and BH led 1-0 after the 1st round. In the 2nd round Tumwater would even it when Mikayla Kee hit her shot and Bella Brown was high over the top on hers and after 2 it was 1-1. Both Sydnee Lowe and Rillee Stillings would make their shots in the 3rd and it was 2-2. In the 4th, Jordyn Bender’s shot was blocked by Cassie Mullin and the T-Birds took a 3-2 lead on Stephanie Moore’s goal kick to make it 3-2. In the final round Catherine Taylor had to make her goal or the match was over and she did tying it at 3-3 with Bella Foos for Tumwater left to take the final shot. Foos punched it in for the game winner and Tumwater had beaten Black Hills in a shootout for the 2nd time this season with the same shout-out score 4-3. Tumwater will host RA Long on Saturday in the opening round of the District Tournament while Black Hills will also host either Hockinson, Ridgefield or Columbia River.

Our Tommy Lowe of the Greene Realty Group Players of the Game went to Tumwater’s Bella Foos and Black Hills’ Sydnee Lowe.
